How to Choose Your Roofing Contractor

When choosing the right contractor to do your roof, there are a many factors to consider. Here a few of the most important:

References. If your contractor cannot provide references of satisfied customers to support his/her claim of professional results, do not hire!

Accredidations. In today’s roofing market, there are way too many people claiming to be professionals. The only way to be sure, is to look for credentials of manufacturer certified contractors. This proves that through continuing education on the ever changing processes of roofing, and commitment to quality results, the manufacturer is willing to provide support to these few contractors. Roofing has come a long way from just a hammer and nails, it has become a science to battle the harsh effects of weather, temperature, ventilation, etc., to provide a roof with maximum life expectancy.

Price. With today’s economy, a lot of people are tempted and ultimately fooled when receiving a proposal for thousands of dollars less than the nearest competitor. There is a reason they are so cheap. The profit stays the same, but the labor may be inexperienced, or maybe lowest quality materials, or even worse, maybe even skipping essential portions of the process altogether. An excellent rule is to have 3 estimates by reputable businesses in the area. If they are all close, compare them apples to apples. If one is way higher than the other 2, while doing the same work, then throw it away. If one is way lower, while performing the same work, throw it away also. You have to be smart with your decisions as very few contractors actually care about more than the profit from a sale.

Knowledge. This is probably the most critical step. Ask a lot of questions. A reputable sales person will be able to answer them all with little hesitation. As I mentioned before roofing is a science. This will eliminate the companies that are uneducated, or set in their ways and not changing with technology. Shingles are made different than they were 20 years ago, therefore they have to be installed differently.

Longevity. I list this last because there are many young entrepreneurs that will provide good results at low prices. The fact still remains that approximately half of the roofing businesses started in a year, fail in that same year. Even worse, 75% are gone after 2 years. That great price you paid for your roof 2 years ago, isn’t looking all that good now that it leaks and you can’t find the contractor because he isn’t in business any more.
